About You
Are you an accounting student or a current staff-level professional looking for a full-time opportunity to work with a growing firm that is an established leader in the construction space in the Carolinas? At Smith Kesler, you will use your critical thinking abilities to help solve problems while you work with clients from across the construction industry to develop your technical skills and gain an understanding of the industry. You will also develop your communication and managerial skills through direct interaction with client executives and owners. Over time, you will be responsible for various engagements and client relationships and will be expected to represent the firm in the markets and communities in which we operate. You will be coached by our experienced staff and management personnel. As your skill set grows, you will assume greater responsibility and actively participate in determining your career path.
What You Will Do
- Complete audit and review testing on financial statement accounts
- Work with client personnel to reconcile account differences and analyze financial data
- Prepare income tax returns for clients as well as executives and owners and provide proactive tax planning and guidance throughout the year
- Research tax laws and regulations to determine their application and impact on clients
- Prepare financial statements along with related disclosures and supplementary information
- Participate in client meetings alongside Smith Kesler stockholders and managers
- Demonstrate effective time management and the ability to successfully coordinate several concurrent client engagements and related tasks
- Hone your oral and written communication skills with direct exposure to firm leadership as well as to client executives and owners
- Maintain close attention to detail while also demonstrating a strong willingness to take initiative by assisting clients and teammates in providing timely and actionable guidance
- Demonstrate a commitment to meeting client deadlines and an ability to work under pressure, especially during the year-end financial close, reporting, and tax compliance periods
- Experience a high degree of exposure to a broad range of accounting, business, and tax concepts and develop your leadership and advisory skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Staff positions require an associate’s degree in accounting
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting is required to sit for the CPA exam or to obtain a CPA certification which is required for future advancement within the firm
- Strong technical accounting and tax knowledge
- Solid work ethic and commitment to learning on the job
- Ability to travel to client locations locally with occasional overnight travel required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

You will develop strong communication and managerial skills through direct interaction with our own accounting professionals, managers, and clients. As your skill set grows over time, you will assume greater responsibility and handle multiple tasks spanning different departments within the firm.
What You Will Do
- Type financial statements, correspondence, and other projects as required
- Perform bookkeeping and other finance-related tasks for multiple clients
- Perform various tasks associated with the processing of tax returns
- Assist with copying, mailing, and filing of records
- Maintain close attention to detail while also taking an initiative in assisting others
- Experience a high degree of exposure to a broad range of accounting, business, and tax concepts
Minimum Qualifications
- Accounting paraprofessionals will ideally have education and/or experience in the areas of business administration, bookkeeping, or other related areas
